The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are global agendas which are also known as the Global Goals. SDGs were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. The Sustainable Development Goals consist of 17 interlinked global goals. SDG 7 or Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy is one of them.
The mission statement of SDG 7 is to “Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.” The goal has five targets which can be categorized in two segments- “outcome targets” and “means of achieving targets”. Three out of the five targets are “outcome targets”: i) Universal access to modern energy; ii) Increase global percentage of renewable energy; iii) Double the improvement in energy efficiency. The rest two targets are “means of achieving targets” which are i) To promote access to research, technology and investments in clean energy; and ii) Expand and upgrade energy services for developing countries. SDG 7 and Climate change mitigation (SDG 13) are closely related.  In order to achieve long term climate goals, the world needs to put more effort into renewable energy like solar energy.
